COIMBATORE: A southern railway official on Saturday said the Podanur railway station would be revamped at a cost of Rs 24 crore at the earliest.
“It is one of the oldest railway stations in the state. It was a prominent railway station before Coimbatore emerged as a city,” he said.
It is to be noted that the Podanur and Tirupur railway stations were among the 508 railway stations in the country for which prime minister Narendra Modi laid a foundation stone for a redevelopment scheme on August 6.
After the visit of Salem divisional railway manager Pankaj Kumar Sinha on Thursday, the official said, a puja was performed at Podanur railway station on Friday to begin the modification work.
“The aim is to turn Podanur railway station into a world-class transport hub, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and inclusive infrastructure for the passengers and visitors. Importance will be given to ease vehicular congestion at the main and secondary entrances, by providing required infrastructure facilities,” he said.
The official said there was a provision for two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking facilities. “The area at the main entrance will be landscaped, while the façade, elevation at the front, waiting hall, toilets and booking offices will get a facelift. The railway station will get a 6ft wide foot over-bridge with five lifts to access it. The station will be made more disabled-friendly with better facilities for them.”
He said the station would also get LED signages and improved sanitation and drinking water facilities, as part of the redevelopment work. “The station will get LED lights as well.”
He said the Tirupur railway station would be refurbished at a cost of Rs 22 crore. “The work will begin soon. Its waiting hall, toilets, platforms and booking offices will get a facelift. LED lights will be fitted to save electricity. The station will get additional platform shelters and an escalator. There is also a provision for platform fencing.”
