This year also saw 19 cruise ships arrive in Stockholm for the first time, with the UK’s newest cruise line Ambassador making its maiden visit with Ambience.
Thomas Andersson, CEO, Ports of Stockholm, explained, ‘Stockholm is very popular and due to the current situation [the Russia-Ukraine conflict], many cruise ships have chosen to stay extra days in Stockholm. The cruise passengers are very important to Stockholm financially and generate over 1,000 jobs in the region.’
New quay opens
The success follows the opening of a new quay recently in Stockholm. Said Stefan Scheja, marketing manager, ferries and cruises, Ports of Stockholm, ‘During the summer a brand new cruise quay also opened at Frihamnen Port. This has increased our flexibility and means we can welcome more cruise ships to make turnaround calls in Stockholm.’
Shore power coming to Stadsgården quays
This summer has seen Ports of Stockholm begin construction work on the facilities required to supply shore power to cruise ships at the Stadsgården quays – the most centrally located in Stockholm.
The groundbreaking ceremony to start building shore power connections at berths 167 and 160 took place during World Water Week 2022. It is estimated that at least 45% of cruise calls will be able to connect to shore power at the two quays by 2023 and 2024, respectively.
The environmental investment is being made as part of an initiative with the Baltic Sea ports of Copenhagen/Malmö, Aarhus and Helsinki, aimed at significantly lowering air pollution in Stockholm and around the Baltic Sea.
The season closes October 22 with AIDADiva’s departure from its city centre quay.
