CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – Puma Steel is holding a competition for Welding scholarships students at Laramie County Community College (LCCC).
This scholarship is for juniors and seniors from Cheyenne’s three high schools and students across the region.
The Puma Steel scholarship program started 5 years ago and will be offering a total of 20,000 dollars in scholarships to the top 15 competitors this year.
The company decided to sponsor a couple of Welding scholarships at LCCC to give back to the community and it grew from there. This year there are approximately 60 candidates from 4 states.
The preliminary competition testing will be held at the LCCC School of Welding to whittle down the candidates.
Welders and Tradespeople are currently in short supply and high demand.
“There’s a shortage nation-wide, there’s a lot of people from my generation that are retiring. and it’s a problem, we have a shortage nation-wide in all skilled labors, people working in the crafts and the trades and we’re doing our little bit to help that situation,” said Rex Lewis, President of Puma Steel.
Puma steel and the American Institute of Steel Construction will kick off their statewide manufacturing day celebrations, on Wyoming’s Steel day, on September 24.
