PUNE: An expression of interest has been floated by the Pune airport authorities to bring in 5 AED (automated external defibrillator) machines at the facility to deal with any kind of medical emergencies.

City-based aviation expert and analyst Dhairyashil Vandekar, who has been continuously pursuing and demanding the bringing of these machines said that he had got a reply from the civil aviation ministry pertaining to the same.

“It has been said that one such machine has been made available in the emergency medical room of the airport. Airports like Mumbai have got have got 120 AEDs which are places strategically so that they can be used immediately in case of a medical emergency. With cardiac arrests a major issue now, these machines will save lives of both passengers as well as airport and airline staff who work constantly under heavy stress and pressure,” Vandekar said.

AEDs are portable devices which are used to save people who have experienced a sudden cardiac arrest. Vandekar said that all staff at the airport needed to be trained to use these machines. “These machines are handy and should be placed at different locations of the airport with proper display. Proper training to use the AEDs needs to be given to all staffers. With the new terminal building of the Pune airport soon to be inaugurated, more AEDs can be procured in the future. I like to to thank and civil aviation ministry and the AAI to have gone ahead to started the procedure of procuration of the same for Pune,” Vandekar said.
