PWD fails to appoint contractors to make safer roads in Maharashtra, ET Infra

PUNE: Over 1,000 pothole complaints received on the state public works department (PWD)’s online grievance redressal system are yet to be addressed due to the agency’s failure to appoint contractors.

After a two-month trial period, the online system received 1,013 pothole complaints on state highways in July. “However, none of them have been filled as the department is yet to appoint contractors to address the complaints. We shall float tenders by month-end,” a senior PWD official told TOI on Wednesday.

Under the online complaint redressal system, people can post pictures of damaged roads on state highways using the cellphone application (pothole complaint redressal system) for PWD to take corrective actions. The department has a 1-lakh-km road network under its jurisdiction.

Ashish Muley, a frequent traveller, said he had uploaded pictures of bad patches on the state highways, especially in the Konkan stretch, long back. “However, when I was travelling in the Konkan area, I did not see any improvement. The potholes have only increased due to the rainfall,” he said.

PWD was to temporarily address the complaints by filling the potholes with crushed stones as bituminous material cannot be used during the monsoon. Ujjwala Kaup, who recently visited Ahmednagar, said the state highways were in bad shape and needed urgent repairs. “The temporary repairs are of no use as the fillings are washed away during heavy rainfall,” she said.

Entrepreneur Suma Vyawahare said, “We regularly travel to Baramati. The state highway roads leading to Baramati are in a very poor shape. They should have started repairing them before the monsoon itself.”

The system has been developed in such a way that it would not just track the geographical location of the potholes, but also assign an engineer for repairs. Under the system, a junior engineer is expected to visit the site and carry out the repairs within three days of complaining. Once the repair is done, the engineer is expected to click a picture of the repaired site, which is to be verified by the deputy engineer.
