Tell us about the advancement in technology in the wound care segment?
Over the recent past, the emphasis in wound care research has been on developing a range of wound dressings that support accelerated wound healing. Wound healing is a complicated and continuous process affected by several underlying factors, that affect the healing process. The research in this segment has led to many new developments and shift from simple dressings to more advanced devices and products that support innovative healing solutions for both practitioners and patients across the care continuum. This helps generate superior clinical outcomes while decreasing overall cost of care. Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) and Advanced Wound Care Solutions have changed the practice of medicine across new and growing categories, including installation, dressings, and disposables.
How has the segment evolved with time and what are the current challenges?
A significant amount of progress has been made in the field of wound management through scientific research which has led to better understanding of wound healing. Technological advancements have resulted in innovative solutions like NPWT, Advance Wound Dressings made of synthetic components as well as from natural sources that support in targeting factors which lead to faster wound healing and better patient outcomes. This is still work in progress and further efforts are required in gaining understanding around complexity of wound environment due to patients’ comorbidity, growing complexity with the increasing percentage of aging populations and thus contributing to higher incidence of chronic non healing wounds. Also, wounds are not considered as real disease and thus effort are required towards creating more awareness, education and training to support patients and caregivers alike.
What is Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (N.P.W.T) and Advanced Wound Care Dressings and how they help?
Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) creates an environment that promotes wound healing by delivering negative pressure (a vacuum) at the wound site through a foam dressing, drawing the wound edges together, removing infectious materials, reducing edema, and promoting granulation tissue formation. When sealed and placed under negative pressure, the dressing conforms to the wound bed.
Advanced Wound Dressings are made up of synthetic and natural materials like hydrogels, hydrocolloids, films, foams, fabrics, sponges, alginates etc. These are used to treat hard to heal complex wounds. In addition to supporting Moist Wound Healing, AWC products help in maintaining a stable temperature around the wound, facilitate oxygen flow (breathability), and protect the wound against contamination and infection. They are also gentle upon removal, preventing further pain and harm to the afflicted area thus supporting patients better.
