Regulator for steel cement sectors

Business Bureau :

The long pending demand of country’s builders and contractors for a regulatory authority for steel and cement sectors may soon be a reality as Builders Association of India (BAI) on Saturday said the Central Government has initiated steps for it. National President of BAI Nimesh Paatel said that the regulatory authority could be set up within the next 6 months. Paatel, who is in the city to attend the BAI’s national-level conference on August 7, was interacting with the mediapersons here. Paatel said this after the BAI office-bearers’ meeting with Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary.

For quite long, the BAI was demanding the Government to take necessary steps to establish a regulatory authority for steel and cement sectors to curb cartelisation and ‘undue profiteering’ being allegedly done by the cement manufacturers. The body was also demanding regulator for the steel sector to keep a tab on irrational hike in its prices. The construction sector is bearing the brunt of stupendous hike in cement prices which the contractors and builders claimed happened because of ‘cartelisation’. They also alleged steel manufacturers of indulging in unethical trade practices to push up the prices. The conference of BAI will be held at Hotel Centre Point, Ramdaspeth, on August 7 wherein Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will address the delegates representing various parts of the country. BAI will also felicitate its former President P R Mundle on the occasion. Rajendra Athawale, National Vice President of BAI, Pradip Nagrare, BAI Nagpur President; Sunil Mishra, Butibori Centre Chairman of BAI; Jayant Khadatkar; Vice President – Co-ordination Committee; Sunil Ullhe, Secretary; and others were also present.
