Relaying 500 roads in Chennai in 15 days, Infra News, ET Infra

CHENNAI: Ahead of the Northeast monsoon, Greater Chennai Corporation has set a target to relay 500 roads across the city by October 10.

This is set to give relief to residents in added areas such as Manapakkam, Mugalivakkam, Ramapuram, Porur and Madipakkam, where craters, potholes and road sink-ins mark the areas.

“We have already re-laid close to 100 roads since September 20. We are having challenges to relay roads as there is rains sporadically, said chief engineer of GCC, S Rajendiran.

“We cannot transport hot mix in the morning to core city areas due to restrictions on heavy vehicles. At night, it rains. So we are using sunny days to fix up to 500 roads before we have full-fledged rains,” he added.

Before relaying the roads, the corporation is carrying out a drive to remove parked and abandoned vehicles with the help of police. “We cover up to 20 kilometres a day. In addition, we are carrying out patch work for ₹13 crores. This will be finished before the rains begin,” said Rajendiran.

In the last few days, GCC has relaid several roads including Chowdary Nagar Main Road, Kadamban street, Kattabomman Street in Valasaravakkam and Wireless Cross Road in Porur.

Mark Selvaraj, road and urban infrastructure expert, said there is no standard road-relaying drawing and road work is done as per the judgment of the local engineer.

“One engineer would suggest 80mm milling to create slope on one side while another would suggest 40mm. There would be alterations and changes based on local inspections leading to a compromise in quality in milling depth and compaction. We must ensure uniformity in relaying of roads,” he said.

Jayaram Venkatesan of Arappor Iyakkam, which started a citizen audit of bad roads on Monday, said that they have received up to 100 complaints of bad and unmanageable roads in a single day. “We will review these complaints and submit them to the Greater Chennai Corporation for vetting and relaying. We will also follow up on the progress and quality,” said Venkatesan.
