VISAKHAPATNAM: Road accidents in the district declined by 23 per cent between January and August 2023, compared to the same period last year.

Deputy transport commissioner GC Raja Ratnam said that from January to August end this year, 767 road accident cases were reported in Visakhapatnam. During the same period, last year, their were 996 road accident cases on the records.

In terms of fatality, a total of 303 persons were killed in road accidents in 2022. The death toll was 147 from January to June in 2023.

“The district administration’s continuous efforts and regular meetings on road safety brought down the number of road accidents in the district. Their efforts will continue,” said Raja.

He added that more than 21 crore was spent on road safety measures at various locations in the district.

The authorities have spent 1.17 crore on speed-breakers and line marking on the roads, 8 crore on pothole repairs, 54 lakh on improving street lighting at the strategic locations. This apart, 42 lakh was spent on construction of underpass and another 43 lakh was spent on junction developments.

Visakhapatnam city police said that among the victims in road crashes, over 60 per cent were two-wheeler riders. Majority of the two-wheeler riders have been flouting the traffic norms, the cops added.

The motorists in the city said that the number of vehicles have increased on the city roads for the past few years, but civic bodies failed to improve the road infrastructure in the city, resulting in traffic chaos and road crashes.

Police said that they managed to mitigate road crashes in some locations. “We have been using speed laser guns to mitigate rash and negligent driving. The drive against tipsy driving intensified at every location to reduce drunk driving,” the police added.
