Wellington’s hills have taken a battering in the wet weather soaking the city, with 160 slips over the past week closing roads and tracks and crushing cars.

The problem peaked on Friday, when 90 slips were reported to the Wellington City Council, with a further 35 slips reported on Saturday, and another 10 on Sunday morning.

“We are asking the public to stay away from the slip sites where feasible as they are a possible safety risk until the area is stabilised,” said council spokesperson Victoria Barton-Chapple.

Walks were off the cards in Otari-Wilton’s Bush, with the council warning people away from the tracks after a significant and hazardous landslide came down from the edge of Wilton Park on Saturday.

“There is very deep mud and the slip is still moving, so this is a genuine hazard,” spokesperson Richard MacLean said on Sunday.

In Eastbourne, Lower Hutt, an $80,000 Tesla was buried under a landslide on Saturday night.

The car’s owners were hosting a gathering when they heard cars honking outside.

They went outside to investigate and found one of their cars, a large Ford ute, had been pushed into the middle of the road by the slip. Their other car, a 2021 Tesla, was half buried under the land that came down.

Another hazardous slip has closed the road between Breaker Bay and Seatoun, known as the Pass of Branda.

It was likely to remain closed for several days and residents were asked to keep clear due to its ongoing instability and the fact large rocks are continuing to come down.

Diversions were in place in Main Rd in Tawa on Sunday, after has a slip between Victory Ave and MacLennan St. The road was likely to be closed for several days because of the amount of material and a large unstable tree at the top of the slip, which probably needed to be removed.

The top sports fields behind Tawa College were also affected by a large slip which came down from the hill above on Friday night.

In Lower Hutt, both lanes on the road out of Wainuiomata were blocked by a large slip at the top of the hill road. Another slip in Lower Hutt was blocking Harbour View Rd near the corner of City View Rd.

Two other roads were closed in Wellington city because of slips: Laura Avenue in Brooklyn and Takarau Gorge Road between Johnsonville and Makara Beach. Ngaio Gorge was under stop-go management.

State Highway 59, along the coast from Porirua to Paekākāriki, has been closed all weekend from Pukerua Bay.

Barton-Chapple said the slips and other weather incidents, including trees down and flooding, had made the weekend “very busy” for the council.
