Australia’s Alliance Air refinances debt for E190 expansion

03.06.2021 – 22:20 UTC

Alliance Airlines (QQ, Brisbane Int’l) has refinanced its debt facilities, due to expire in January 2022, allowing the airline access to an extended amount of AUD176 Australian dollars (USD136.3 million) to conclude its E190 expansion.

The arrangements include refinancing its current debt and introducing new, longer-term fixed loans, the company said in a stock market filing.

As previously reported, Alliance Airlines has commitments with Jetran for the purchase of sixteen ex-American Airlines E190s in addition to fourteen ex-Copa Airlines E190s from Azorra Aviation. To date, twenty-two of the Embraer jets have been settled with five operating revenue services. The remaining units will be entered into service progressively throughout 2021 and 2022, providing the company with substantial growth capacity.

It is using the incoming Embraer regional jets to replace its existing Fokker Aircraft fleet including twenty-seven F100s, four F50s, and fourteen F70s, the company said.

The extended debt facilities will be used for the settlement of the balance of the…

Guyana rules out state carrier for now

28.05.2021 – 11:21 UTC

The Guyanese government has ruled out the establishment, at this stage, of a state-owned national carrier and instead wants more international airlines to serve the country, located in the north-eastern corner of South America.

Speaking at the Inaugural Virtual Diaspora Conference hosted by the country’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ministry on May 22, 2021, Finance Minister Ashni Singh said: “It is not currently on the agenda to establish a state-owned airline,” reported Demerara Waves News.

He said establishing a state-owned airline at this stage was too risky, citing the example of cash-strapped regional airline LIAT (LIA, Antigua), currently under administration, from which Barbados and St Vincent & the Grenadines have exited as shareholders because of the financial burden. He said COVID-19 had further hampered the operations of a number of state carriers.

Instead, Singh said, the government successfully was attracting private airlines to serve the Guyana route. “We are pushing aggressively to attract more international airlines to come to Guyana and we are actually seeing the results of that already, so at a time…

FAA greenlights B737 MAX electrical fix

17.05.2021 – 03:50 UTC

Boeing (BOE, Chicago O’Hare) has won approval from US regulators for a fix of an electrical grounding issue that affected about 100 B737-8s, clearing the way for their quick return to service after flights were halted in early April, Reuters reports.

An FAA official confirmed the agency had approved the service bulletins and associated instructions, after Boeing had sent two bulletins to affected airlines on May 12, advising them on the fixes.

“After gaining final approvals from the FAA, we have issued service bulletins for the affected fleet,” Boeing told Reuters. “We are also completing the work as we prepare to resume deliveries.”

Boeing on April 8 had notified the FAA that it had recommended to 16 operators of a specific group of recently-built B737 MAX aircraft to temporarily remove them from service to address a manufacturing issue that could affect the operation of a backup power control unit in the cockpit. The recommendation was made to allow for verification that a sufficient ground path existed for a component of the electrical power…

interCaribbean Airways set to make South American debut

06.05.2021 – 19:03 UTC

interCaribbean Airways (JY, Providenciales) is set to make its mainland South American debut after the Guyanese government granted it fifth and seventh freedom traffic rights at Georgetown Cheddi Jagan airport.

Speaking during an engagement with travel agents in the capital Georgetown on May 3, 2021, Public Works Minister Juan Edghill confirmed the award but did not reveal a start-up date. This follows the government’s approval of route rights to Suriname’s Fly All Ways in March this year, local media reported.

“We are engaging new airlines to come to Guyana. We have just approved, at the level of Cabinet, two new airlines, Fly All Ways and interCaribbean Airways. There are applications of other airlines that we are considering,” Edghill said, adding he planned to engage with Virgin Atlantic (VS, London Heathrow).

He was confident that expansion of Georgetown Cheddi Jagan, the nation’s national airport located about 41km south of the capital, could attract more international flights and become a hub for regional traffic, linking South America with the Caribbean. He…
