Russia’s defence ministry said on Sunday that its forces had seized another town outside the city of Sievierodonetsk, where Russia has engaged Ukrainian forces in weeks of fierce street fighting and artillery duels as it pushes to expand its territory in the eastern Donbas region. Russian soldiers and Moscow-backed separatists claimed control of Metolkine, just southeast of Sievierodonetsk, the ministry said. The Russian state news agency Tass said that many Ukrainian fighters had surrendered there, although it was not possible to independently verify the claims. Ukrainian officials have acknowledged recent setbacks in the defence of Sievierodonetsk and neighbouring Lysychansk, two of the last cities in the Luhansk province of Donbas that are not yet under Russian control.
