New Delhi: The retail industry in India is set to grow by 20 to 30 per cent over the next 5 years and is likely to generate 2.5 crore new jobs by 2030, said Sekhar Garisa, CEO, Monster.com in an interaction with ETRetail.

According to the Monster Employment Index, the retail industry marked a 47 per cent annual growth in job demand in April 2022.

Sharing insights on segment wise hiring demand, Garisa said that e-commerce is leading the retail job market on the back of an expanding market and growing demand for consumer goods across segments consequently creating more jobs. He further highlighted that jobs in demand in e-retail are particularly focused in analytics, automation and AI/ML to understand consumer behavior and predict user demand.

Along with e-commerce, social commerce is one of the leading trends in the industry, said Garisa, adding that hiring for specialists in social commerce has increased five times in the last couple of years.

Talking about the growing demand for gig workers, he shared that of the 15 million gig workers across sectors in India, the majority are in the retail industry with close to 1.7 million gig roles.

Sharing the outlook for future growth of the gig economy in the retail sector, Garisa said, there will be high demand for gig workers as the last mile delivery and industry may undergo a demand supply gap for talent.
