UN: Russian fertilizers are welcome at EU ports

(MENAFN) In an interview with RIA Novosti that was published on Saturday, United Nation Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that major European ports have expressed their willingness to assist the sale of Russian fertilizers.

In answer to a query on the export of Russian fertilizers, the official stated, “we are… in contact with the ports. We have received positive signals from Rotterdam, from the Finnish port of Kotka. We are also in discussions with Antwerp and Hamburg. So we are very attentive to this problem and very committed to solving it.”

A multilateral agreement was made in Istanbul in July to remove limits on Russian grain and fertilizer exports and to open up Ukrainian grain exports across the Black Sea. Even while the sale of Russian agricultural products is not officially prohibited by Western penalties, the measures nonetheless have an impact on transportation, making it difficult to pay for and insure Russian goods, among other things.

However, tons of fertilizers are already accumulating in European Union ports, according to Russia, and the expected easing of limitations on Russian exports has not yet taken place. According to Guterres, who talked with European Union officials this week, things is going to get better shortly.
