Following the “diamond rush” that is causing a whirlwind of excitement in KwaHlathi near Ladysmith, the question of uncut diamonds, and their possible value, is on the tip of everyone’s tongue.
An independent jeweller, Rishen Pather, said a rough diamond dealer’s licence is required to buy uncut diamonds. Speaking about the hype surrounding Ladysmith, Pather said he believes what’s being found may be quartz stones, a gem he came across in Kimberley through people trying to make a fast buck.
