NEW DELHI: Country’s youngest low-cost carrier Akasa Air, will commence its maiden international flight services to Doha from March 28, beginning with four non-stop flights a week, connecting Mumbai with Qatar’s capital.

The Jhunjhunwala family-backed airline has become the first Indian airline to commence international operations in a record period of 19 months since its inception. The airline started its domestic flight operations in August 2022.

Apart from Doha, the airline has also received rights to start flight operations to Riyadh, Jeddah, and Kuwait, which are likely to be the airline’s next destinations under Phase I of Akasa Air’s international expansion, a senior executive from the airline told ET Infra.

“As we get to the summer you will see more rights being awarded to us, that’s when you will see Phase II of the expansion,” Praveen Iyer, Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Akasa Air, told ET Infra at ‘Wings India 2024’ air show, held in Hyderabad on January 18.

At ‘Wings India 2024’, Akasa Air placed an order for additional 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, taking the airline’s confirmed order book to 226 aircraft, of which 23 aircraft have already joined the fleet.

The additional order will allow the airline to expand its domestic and international operations.

“We are delighted to announce our international operations with the launch of our first destination – Doha, to our growing network. The introduction of four flights a week, connecting directly with Mumbai, a key Indian commercial hub, will cater to a diverse set of travellers from the two countries, facilitating tourism, commerce and strengthening bilateral ties,” said Vinay Dube, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Akasa Air, in a statement.

The flights to Doha will be undertaken on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday of a week with return fares starting at Rs. 29,012.
