Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) was first registered on July 19, 1990. Sreedharan took over as CMD on July 30. The first thing he did was prepare a new report for the project instead of the one prepared by the Southern Railways. It is during this period that the Kawasaki bikes were first introduced.
There were many fresh graduate engineers as employees under that company. They took on the daring task with the help of Kawasaki. Kawasakis paced through roads that remained alien to normal vehicles, carrying engineers and levelling equipment. Around 100 modified bikes were brought for this purpose. The corporation provided the fuel needed by the vehicles with a daily allowance of Rs 100. The ‘Kawasaki bikers’ finished the task way before the expected time.
