Varanasi, Agra lead in Smart City scheme's mission goals

LUCKNOW: More than Rs 5,000 crore have been infused for augmenting the infrastructure of the 10 smart cities of Uttar Pradesh since 2019 with Agra and Varanasi leading the list in implementing the mission goals.

Racing to meet the June 2023 deadline set by the Union government to complete the ongoing Smart city works, a review of the progress being made by the 10 cities is going to be held in the coming week, officials said.

The urban development department has sought a detailed list of works that have been executed by the executive officers who are supervising the mission objectives in Lucknow, Agra, Bareli, Varanasi, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, Aligarh, Kanpur and Jhansi.

While Agra and Varanasi have achieved majority of the milestones and completed more than 85% of the goals, the remaining smart cities need to expedite the ongoing projects.

“As Agra and Varanasi have been meeting the deadline and fulfilling objectives, the two cities have managed to secure the highest amount of funds,” said a senior officer from the department.
