VEERA to be deployed on national highways in future, Infra News, ET Infra


CHENNAI: The state’s first vehicle to help rescue accident victims trapped inside their vehicles Vehicle for Extrication in Emergency Rescue and Accidents (VEERA) will be engaged in Chennai city, Tambaram and Avadi police limits as of now. Its operation will be expanded to cover the national highways in future, said Greater Chennai police commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore.

Demonstrating VEERA on Tuesday, Rathore said the city police would discuss with IIT-M and highways department to expand the scope of the VEERA project. During the demo, trained police and fire service personnel showed metal doors are quickly cut open and the victim rescued. The vehicle, manned by 12 personnel, has a spreader, electric winch, circular saw, pneumatic lifting bags and stabilization tool among other tools.

Rathore said police were aiming at reducing traffic accidents and a committee had been formed to fix the speed limit and it would be announced soon after taking into consideration various factors. R Sudhakar, additional commissioner of police Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP), said that this year, as on September 11, a total of 341 fatal accidents were reported in the city, which is 20 as compared to the same period last year.

“Fatal accidents are in a decreasing trend in the city and we are putting in more efforts to reduce the fatalities further”, Sudhakar added.
