The Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) has demanded that Konkani-speaking locals be employed in the banking sector in the State, to ensure that locals get hassle-free services in the banks.
Speaking to reporters in Panaji on Tuesday, RGP supremo Manoj Parab informed that even Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said banks should employ staff who speak in the local language.
“In Goa, however, it is observed that non-Konkani speaking staff is employed due to which the common Goans are facing trouble in enjoying hassle-free banking services due to the language barrier. Not all Goans can understand English or Hindi,” Parab opined.
“There are 46 banks operating in Goa, of which 12 are public banks, 17 are private banks and 14 are cooperative banks. All these banks have 780 branches all over Goa, which means there is large employment generated,” he stated, but regretted that when Goans are facing problem of unemployment, they do not get jobs in banks as outsiders are employed.
“We will write to the Reserve Bank of India requesting that directions be issued to all banks to ensure that at least the front office staff who are coordinating with the public are Goans,” Parab stated.
He further said a copy of the memorandum will also be sent to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and head offices of all banks operating in the State.
Parab further demanded that recruitment advertisements to posts in the banks be advertised in the local language in leading dailies of Goa, while also demanding that the signages in the banks as well as transaction slips be made available in Konkani.
“Our Goans are depositing crores of money in the banks but when it comes to employment we are deprived of the same,” Parab pointed out.
