What Yankees’ Gleyber Torres thinks of power outage

NEW YORK — The Yankees’ offensive problems run long and deep. Among the strangest? Gleyber Torres’ power outage.

After hitting just three home runs in the shortened, 60-game season last year, he’s hit only two in 2021.

He had two hits in Friday’s 5-2 loss to the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium and has been performing better at the plate lately. Going into Friday, he was hitting .289 with a .743 OPS since April 20.

In the recent past, Torres was a multidimensional power threat. In 2019, he crushed 38 homers. In 2018, his rookie season, he hit 24.

Torres said he’s not worrying about it.

“I feel good,” Torres told reporters via Zoom. “I’m just working right now the first couple weeks, the first month of the season was a little bit of a struggle. But I’m getting better right now. I’m just focusing on putting the ball in play, try to get on base and the power I think is coming.

“I don’t focus on that. I don’t worry about that. At any point of the season, I can start hitting homers. Right now I just focus on putting the ball in play and don’t do too much or strikeout myself. I don’t really worry about that. I’ve got Judge and Stanton to hit a lot of homers for us, so my moment is coming.”

The Yankees’ entire offense has been down through their first 57 games. Their .686 OPS was 22nd in the league. They have hit 68 homers — 11th in baseball.
