Xiaomi India's GM of Marketing Sumit Sonal resigns

New Delhi: Xiaomi India General Manager of Marketing, Sumit Sonal has stepped down. He handled marketing activities for both Xiaomi and its sub-brand Redmi, for Smartphones, Smart TVs, Laptops & Tablets, AIoT, Music, Health & Fitness.

Sonal announced his resignation in a LinkedIn post, stating “it’s time for me to move on to new adventures, challenges, and opportunities”

Sonal joined Xiaomi India in 2017 and was a familiar face at the company’s launch events.
The development comes amidst a spate of departures from the company. Xiaomi India Chief Business Officer, Raghu Reddy resigned in December 2022, while the company’s previous president, Manu Kumar Jain moved to Dubai taking up a global role in the company, after the enforcement directorate charged the company with FEMA violations.

The company’s market share has also been declining. In the third quarter of 2022, Xiaomi India maintained its leadership position, but its market share declined 2% yoy in Q3 2022 to 21%, even as rivals closed in.

Xiaomi didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

November saw the steepest monthly decline ever – 50% sequentially and 43% on-year – as low demand for the high-volume entry-level smartphone segment continued to take a hit, following up on a slower-than-usual festive season, said Counterpoint Research. It added that Apple is likely to have cracked the top five for the first time ever in November. But for the full fourth quarter, the iPhone maker may still be out of the top five, experts said.
