NASHIK: A 20-km stretch of the Mumbai-Agra highway outside the city limits would soon be concreted as the patch witnesses frequent potholes during monsoon and traffic congestion.
The tender for the same has been floated, said Nashik city MLA Devyani Pharande.
“Food and civic supply minister Chhagan Bhujbal, MLA Manik Kokate, MLA Shaikh Rashid, and I had requested a meeting headed by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar concerning the issue of the Mumbai-Agra highway,” read a release by Pharande.
The meeting to discuss the problems faced by commuters on the highway was held on Tuesday.
Pharande said, “The Mumbai-Agra highway is crucial for the people of North Maharashtra to travel to Mumbai. At present, it takes six to seven hours to reach the state capital.”
Pharande, during the meeting, highlighted the concerns and said a stretch of the highway from Gonde to Pimpalgaon was a six-lane road, while from Gonde to Vadpe towards the Mumbai side was a four-lane stretch, leading to severe bottle-necks.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA demanded a six-lane road from Gonde to Vadpe to eliminate the congestion.
District guardian minister Dada Bhuse, who was also present at the meeting, said the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC) was developing the stretch between Thane and Vadpe.
As per details, the development work on the stretch aims to construct underpasses or flyovers at spots prone to traffic snarls. The road will now also have eight lanes.
“The entire work on the Thane-Vadpe stretch would be over within the next four months,” Pharande said.
