The U.S. Department of Energy has added four new smart manufacturing hubs to a national clean energy initiative, agency officials announced.
The announcement doubles the number of Smart Manufacturing Innovation Centers under the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Institute, which was established five years ago to accelerate the adoption of smart manufacturing through the use of advanced sensors, data analytics, platforms, and controls. The SMICs, in particular, aim to help manufacturers optimize their energy and materials use.
Under the expanded program, Case Western Reserve University in Ohio will host a hub supporting small and medium-sized manufacturers, while Purdue University will provide artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions. Penn State University’s New Kensington center will provide smart manufacturing workforce training.
A final hub, housed by Michigan advanced technology company Feyen Zylstra, will help train technologists at small and mid-sized manufacturers.
The new centers will join the program’s current hubs at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, Texas A&M University, North Carolina State University, and the University of California-Los Angeles.
“Smart manufacturing makes the American manufacturing sector more productive, energy efficient, and competitive on a global scale,” Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Kelly Speakes-Backman said in the announcement. “DOE’s investments in smart manufacturing will accelerate the adoption of these technologies and processes while developing a highly skilled manufacturing workforce for the future.”
