Saudi ports cross 600,000 box mark

Ports across Saudi Arabia moved a total of 600,107 TEU in May 2022, up 1.38 per cent over the same period the previous year.

Export containers rose by 2.57 per cent to 175,958 TEU while import containers fell by 0.64 per cent to 176,978 TEU.

Transshipment containers over the period reached 247,172 TEU, a 2.01 per cent increase year-on-year. This was directly supported by initiatives launched the Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) in line with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS), the authority said.

Cargo volumes also jumped 23.70 per cent year-on-year to 21,041,021 tons.

Lastly, a total of 1,020 vessels docked at Saudi ports last month, up 3.03 per cent compared to May 2021.

MAWANI previously announced that it saw significant growth in cargo throughput and transshipment containers volumes during the first quarter of 2022.

In comparison with last year’s figures, cargo throughput tonnage increased by 7.18 per cent with a total of more than 74 million tonnes, while the number of transshipment containers increased by 5.91 per cent with a total of 1.3 million TEU.

An increase has been registered in the numbers of cars, passengers, and vessels as well, which increased by 0.28 per cent for a total of 3,186 vessels.
