Oak Ridge and Clinton both have events coming up for Juneteenth.
Juneteenth marks the date — June 19, 1865 — o which the news of the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves got to Texas, and the celebration has since spread throughout the country. It is celebrated with festivals and parades in various U.S. cities.
Oak Ridge
Oak Ridge’s Juneteenth Gamble Valley Community Day will be Saturday, June 18, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at 262 Wilberforce Ave.
The event will include various children’s activities and vendors, organizer Tay Collins told The Oak Ridger. It will be similar to last year’s event.
Green McAdoo
Join Green McAdoo Cultural Center for the 2nd Annual Green McAdoo Juneteenth Celebration on Sunday June 19, starting at 3:30 p.m.
The center is at 101 School Street in Clinton.
This year the event will take place in the late afternoon till the evening. Deep South Fish Shack, Chick-N-Sack, and Kona Ice will be on property for food and treats. Children will be able to tie-dye shirts for their father’s for Father’s Day.
Events are as follows:
- 3:30 p.m., Bingo;
- 5 p.m., the Douglas J. Aveda Hair Show;
- 6 p.m., Cake Walk;
- 7 p.m., live music from Ms. Nikki and the Uptown Players.
