MUMBAI: A random survey of indicators that provide minute-by-minute countdown of the trains arrival status at various stations showed 25% display inaccurate information.
Central Railway (CR) has installed Train Management System (TMS) — a computerised system through which information about a train’s arrival and departure is provided on electronic display boards at platforms.
A senior CR official said that a few weeks ago, they had undertaken a random check and found accuracy in 80% indicators at Kurla and Dadar, 90% at Byculla, 65% percent at Ghatkopar and Bhandup, 75% at Mulund and 85% at Diva, Thakurli and Kanjurmarg stations. Bombardier had won the contract for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of TMS on Central Railway stations in Mumbai in 2008.
CR activated TMS between Masjid and Vidyavihar in April 2011. In 2012, the system was activated at all Main line stations till Kalyan. Between CST and Kalyan, there are 26 stations with 92 platforms. The project was more than a decade in the making and cost Rs 32 crore.
Many commuters have stopped relying on countdown (Expected Arrival Time) indicators as they have proven to be highly unreliable.
“At Kurla, I have waited for 10 minutes for a train to arrive even when indicators showed the train will arrive in 3 minutes. Since, there was no sign of the train coming, I changed platform and took a slow train on Harbour line for CSMT.”
At times, the indicators do not change even after a train’s departure. “Once I was waiting at the platform for a fast train to Kalyan. The train had already left, but the indicator still mentioned the arrival time,” said Ghatkopar-resident Ajay Shah.
