INDORE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on February 26 virtually lay the foundation stone for redevelopment of Indore and Ujjain among around a dozen railway stations.
According to Ratlam divisional railway manager (DRM) Rajneesh Kumar, “The PM will on February 26 virtually lay foundation stones for redevelopment of Indore, Ujjain, Sehore, Nagda, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Khachrod, Maksi and Shujalpur. Apart from Ratlam division, the PM will also lay foundation stones for redevelopment and upgradation of other railway stations of the country.”
He added that some changes have been proposed on the frontage of Indore railway station that was earlier proposed on the traditional theme, but has now been proposed on modern look.
The railways have allocated Rs 340 crore in this year’s budget for Indore railway station’s redevelopment and expansion plan totaling Rs 1,000 crore, the senior officials said, adding that many works including upgradation of station in form of face uplifting, while retaining the heritage value of the existing building, facilities like station retails, lounges, shopping arcade, outdoor café, transit hotels and retail spaces are also being planned here.
Besides, the platforms will be lengthened to create room for longer trains along with upgrading the same with new canopies, better waiting rooms as well as kiosks on it. The project also encompasses rebuilding of Old Shastri Bridge to a new 72-meter single span ROB.
The estimated cost of the entire project is approximately around Rs 950 crore. However, some changes proposed in the entire plan are likely to make an impact on its cast. Ujjain railway station will also be redeveloped as an important pilgrimage centre while the project also aims at decongesting the existing station and upgrading it to a new World Class Terminal with adequate access and connectivity and segregated passenger movements.
On Monday, Indore MP Shankar Lalwani visited Indore station and instructed the officials concerned regarding organizing a programme there on February 26. He said that the reconstruction plan has been prepared while considering all the requirements at the station for the next 50 years.
