NAGPUR: On Wednesday, the new Wardha-Nanded railway line project will take a big step forward with Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioning virtually a 39km section between Wardha and Kalamb. In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, the PM will also dedicate a slew of other projects in Yavatmal and the region.
The Wardha-Kalamb broad gauge line is part of the 284km Wardha-Yavatmal-Nanded new broad gauge (BG) line project.
Modi will also open the New Ashti-Amalner broad gauge line, which is part of the Ahmednagar-Beed-Parli new BG line.
The PM will also virtually flag off two train services during the programme. The train will leave Wardha at 8am, reach Kalamb at 10am, start back from Kalamb at 11am and reach Wardha at 1pm. A train service connecting Amalner and New Ashti will also be flagged off.
Central Railway officials said, “The new train services will help improve connectivity between Vidarbha and Marathwada regions, and boost socio-economic development. It will benefit students, traders, and daily commuters of the region. Apart from passenger revenue, it will boost freight in the form of cotton, foodgrain, steel, and iron ore in the months to come.”
The Wardha-Nanded railway line project was announced in the 2008-09 budget but actual work started in 2015.
Railway officials say, “Land acquisition was one of the major hurdle. The total land acquisition required was 2,139 hectare and till now over 1,911 hectares (89%) of land has been acquired.”
However, meagre financial allocations over the years have also hampered the project, which will ease road traffic between major towns in Vidarbha and Marathwada.
