Wayfair growth still sizzling | Home Textiles Today

Boston – Wayfair’s active customer roster jumped 57.3% in the first quarter, driving another period of strong sales growth for the home furnishings e-commerce specialist.

Active customers numbered 33.2 million during the period ended March 31. During company’s analyst call, executives expressed confidence that the consumer focus on home will endure even as the Covid-19 pandemic subsides.

“Even in economies where economy has largely reopened, spending on home is still higher than pre-pandemic,” said Niraj Shah, CEO, co-founder and co-chairman.

Remote work will continue to be a reality for many people, he said, and consumers are eager to begin hosting events with family and friends.

Other Q1 highlights:

  • LTM net revenue per active customer was $461, up 2.7% year over year.
  • Orders per customer, measured as LTM orders divided by active customers, was 1.98 for the first quarter of 2021, compared to 1.86 for the first quarter of 2020.
  • Repeat customers placed 74.5% of total orders in the first quarter of 2021, compared to 69.8% in the first quarter of 2020.
  • Repeat customers placed 10.9 million orders in the first quarter of 2021, up 58.9% year over year.
  • Orders delivered in the first quarter of 2021 were 14.7 million, up 48.8% year over year.
  • Average order value was $237 for the first quarter of 2021, compared to $235 for the first quarter of 2020.
  • In the first quarter of 2021, 60.0% of total orders delivered were placed via a mobile device, compared to 54.8% in the first quarter of 2020

Total revenue for the quarter climbed 49.2% to $3.5 billion, with U.S. net revenue up 42.8% to $2.8 billion. Net income was $18.2 million, or $0.18 per share, compared to a net loss in last year’s Q1 of $285.7 million, or $3.04 per share.
