Aurangabad: The sluggish pace of pipe manufacturing for laying the main pipeline as a part of the new water supply project in Aurangabad has left the citizens fuming.
While manufacturing of 2,500 mm pipes in Aurangabad — instead of getting ready-made from elsewhere — is being already questioned by the civic activists, many fear that the entire Rs 1,680 crore project is bound to miss the deadline of February 3, 2024 due to official as well as political apathy.
Civic activist Rajendra Datey-Patil on Saturday said the private firm hired by Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP), nodal agency for water supply project, was manufacturing around eight pipes per day.
“Considering the overall length of around 40-km of the pipeline from Jayakwadi dam to Aurangabad, it could take more than three years to manufacture the pipes alone. After that, other works such as assembly and laying of pipes will start. It is crystal clear that the entire project may take a minimum of six years if it continues to progress at the current speed,” he said.
Thousands of residents of Aurangabad still do not get water supply from the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and they shell out huge money towards arranging water from private players through tankers and jars.
Alka Beedkar, a resident of Deolai area, said it is unfortunate that the new water supply project is not picking up pace. “The government authorities and public representatives are to be blamed for our hardship. There must be a nexus between private players supplying water and the officials,” she said.
Notably, even if one-third of the stipulated time of three-years for completing the is already over, the work of main pipeline is dubbed as unsatisfactory by the AMC authorities only. When contacted, MJP executive engineer Ajay Singh said he was out of town.
Aurangabad district guardian minister Subhash Desai recently chaired a meeting during the issues surrounding the new water supply project, including cost-escalation due to the delay, were discussed. While Desai asked the MJP officials to speed up the project, civic activists pointed out such earlier pleas that allegedly went unnoticed.
