Barrow, Dalton, Lindal roads to have speed limits slashed

A PLAN to lower speed limits to improve safety on key roads has given the thumbs up by councillors.

Cumbria County Council looked at lowering speed limits on roads in Barrow, Dalton and Lindal after safety fears were raised by residents.

After consulting the public on traffic orders to permanently cut speed limits, councillors have now approved the changes.

Under the changes, a section of Ulverston Road in Dalton would have its speed limit cut from 60mph to 40mph, with another section to be cut from 40mph to 30mph.

Elsewhere a section of Rakesmoor Lane in Barrow would have its limit cut from 60mph to 30mph and 30mph roads in Lindal would become 20mph.

The council said Ulverston Road had been identified as an area where speed has contributed to accidents.

It also said residents had requested a change in the speed limit on the road, which runs past Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School.

The council says the proposed new 30mph limit would be in place from a point 40 metres south-west of the roads’ junction with Urswick Road to a point 150 metres north-east of its junction with Urswick Road.

The 40mph speed limit would be in place its junction with Dalton Roundabout to a point 150 metres north-east of its junction with Urswick Road.

The plan to slash the speed limit at Barrow’s Rakesmoor Lane is said to follow pressure from councillors and residents.

It would aim to ‘slow vehicular traffic where there are likely to be pedestrians in the road’.

The section affected runs from its junction with Bank Lane for 244 metres north.

Changes to speed limits on streets in Lindal are said to follow concerns raised by councillors.

The new limits would be in force the length of Low Farm Close, Church Close, The Green and Guards Road.

The section of the U6099 from its junction with the Guards Road to a point 93 metres west of that would also be affected, as would Pit Lane from its junction with The Green to a point of 368 metres north.

Members of the county council’s local committee for Barrow approved the changes.

Dalton councillor Steve Nott previously welcomed the plan.

He said: “It’s positive news. There have been complaints for a number of years.

“It will help improve safety for everyone

“There’s always a danger of kids running out.

“And further on you’ve got Charnley’s Garden Centre, which gets ever busier.”
