Bengaluru-Mysuru highway to get smoother access, ET Infra

BENGALURU: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will carry out additional works on the Bengaluru-Mysuru access-controlled highway as part of road-safety measures.

Projects worth Rs 688 crore will be taken up in the coming days to streamline multiple entry/exit points by establishing toll booths along the highway. The opening of the toll booths at the entry and exit points near the six towns – Bidadi, Ramanagara, Channapatna, Maddur, Mandya and Srirangapatna – is expected to help motorists using the highway for short-distance travel.

Mysuru-Kodagu MP Prathap Simmha told TOI that apart from the entry and exit points, the NHAI will take up road infrastructure works that will clear traffic gridlocks at these points on either side of the highway.

“A flyover has been proposed at the entry point to the highway at Manipal Hospital in Mysuru. In addition to this, the entry point of the highway near Panchamukhi temple, where an elevated corridor of the highway starts from Bengaluru, will be widened to facilitate smooth flow of traffic coming from NICE road side. The NHAI will acquire additional land for this purpose,” the MP said. It is estimated that the widening of the road is likely to cost Rs 91 crore on the Bengaluru side and Rs 92 crore on Mysuru side. Infrastructure for the entry and exit points will cost another Rs 100 crore.

The NHAI has already invited bids for projects worth Rs 688 crore. The MP said that another Rs 500 crore will be required for acquiring land.

Other road safety projects that are likely to be taken up include continuation of service road, railway over bridge, bridge over Shimsha river, construction of bus bays and metal beam crash barrier for median.

After the 117-km highway was fully opened last year, there have been persistent demands to come up with road-safety measures to reduce accidents. The NHAI has already invited bids to take up works under the hybrid annuity model.
