MANDYA: The protest against the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu launched by Mandya Zilla Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti touched its 100th day, with farmers and members of pro-Kannada organisations staging a rasta roko on the old Bengaluru-Mysuru highway in front of Sir M Visvesvaraya’s statue on Tuesday.

The protesters waved black flags shouting slogans against the Cauvery Water Management Authority, Cauvery Water Regulation Committee, and state and central governments.

Speaking to TOI, samiti convenor Sunanda Jayaram said that despite the protests being held for 100 days, the state government has not come forward to call for a meeting, and the government has not been open about the legal initiatives taken about the Cauvery dispute.

“The water resources minister is more interested in the Mekedatu project than addressing the issues related to the Cauvery crisis and farmers of our region. It is a shame on the government, that it has forced the working class to come on to the streets in protest,” she added.

Meanwhile, addressing the protesters, former MLC KT Srikantegowda said that the Cauvery struggle had entered history books by completing 100 days of protest. He also held the central and stage governments, CWRC, and CWMA responsible for people coming on to the streets.

Ever since the dharna began on August 31, 2023, in front of Sir M Visvesvaraya statue on the old Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, the Cauvery protests witnessed the entire Mandya coming to a standstill with students, advocates, pro-Kannada activists and public extending their support to Mandya Bandh and Karnataka Bandh called against the release of water.

People have also held protest rallies by holding empty tumblers and torches along with cows, and buffaloes on the streets.

The Samiti will continue its protest till December 23 and will wait for the CWRC’s verdict to decide on the future course of action.
