For an hour, Sunday evening’s game at Villa Park was travelling in the right direction for Fulham.
Then they crashed the car.
Scott Parker’s side had edged a scrappy encounter until that point and for the first time in a little over four months, had their heads above the parapet. Hanging on for the three points would have lifted Fulham above Newcastle on goal difference. For a brief time, they were out of the drop zone, another step on the slow march towards achieving Premier League survival.
Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring just after the hour and Fulham needed to preserve that lead for 30 minutes, normally no issue for a side who have proven resolute on the road all season. They only lasted 17.
