Capital To Puri Nh To Be Converted Into Model Stretch, ET Infra

BHUBANESWAR: The government has decided to convert NH-316 between Bhubaneswar and Puri into a model stretch. Transport secretary Usha Padhee asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to put in place the requisite infrastructure to make it Odisha’s first model highway.

Padhee recently convened a meeting with NHAI officials to discuss road safety issues. The NHAI was asked to draw the plan for development of the model stretch and complete the activity in a timely manner. “The chief general manager of NHAI has agreed that the stretch of road from Bhubaneswar to Puri will be developed into a ‘model stretch’. All required infrastructure will be provided,” Padhee said.

NHAI said it has created some model stretches in different states. A model stretch will have all the required safety and aesthetic features like road signage, markings, road furniture and safety items, flawless road designs and proper junctions with entry/exit points.

Sources said the proposed model stretch will have CCTV cameras to detect traffic violations, illumination, drainage, pedestrian walkways, plantation and landscaping, redevelopment of the existing toll plaza at Pipili, user facilities and wayside amenities and no black spots to avoid accidents.

The transport secretary has asked NHAI to construct foot-over bridges (FOBs) at vulnerable stretches of national highways in the state. Responding to her proposal, NHAI officials said funds are not a constraint for construction of FOBs. It sought proposals from the district road safety committees for construction of FOBs.
