CHENNAI: Doctors in a Chennai hospital reconstructed the chest wall of a 50-year-old Bangladeshi man with bone cement and mesh after removing a cancerous tumour that developed from his ribs.
Abdullah came to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai with a tumour developing from his ribs. Doctors said the tumour began as swelling on his chest wall in November 2020.
“Doctors in Bangladesh removed the tumour along with his first and second ribs on the left side in December 2020. Tests showed that it was chondrosarcoma, which is a cancerous tumour that arises from the cartilage that joins the rib to the spine,” said senior consultant in surgical oncology Dr Ajit Pai.
In six months, the tumour returned. This time it was growing rapidly and was bigger. It grew into the vital neck structures and touched huge veins originating from the heart. He was started on chemotherapy even before he met doctors in Apollo Hospitals.
“The tumour on the chest wall did not diminish despite chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Instead it grew bigger,” he said.
He developed breathing difficulties. A team of doctors from various teams performed a 14-hour surgery on February 25. The tumour along with part of the ribs and collar bones were removed. Vital blood vessels were preserved. The surgeons later reconstructed the chest wall with synthetic materials and tissue from the back muscles. The sternum (a bone) was reconstructed with bone cement encased in a mesh and a new chest wall was made.
The patient has recovered well in the post-operative period and tests showed the cancerous tumour was removed completely with negative margins. He is currently undergoing radiation therapy.
