CHENNAI: Members of the Construction and Real Estate Industry Coalition on Saturday staged a protest outside a cement manufacturer’s residence at Boat Club in Chennai to condemn the skyrocketing prices of cement.
Secretary of the coalition S Yuvaraj said a 50kg bag of cement is sold at Rs 350 and Rs 370 in Delhi and Andhra Pradesh, respectively. Noting that the same construction material was being sold at Rs 520 in Tamil Nadu, which is the highest in the country, he said it had affected all sections of the construction sector.
“There is no basis for such a substantial increase in cement prices,” he said. He charged that cartelisation had resulted in a spike in the price of the key construction material.
The South India Cement Manufacturers Association on Saturday announced that it would ensure that cement was made available at a reasonable and acceptable price for the public.
