Delhi Solar Policy 2024: Kejriwal’s Gift to Delhi: Earn Rs 900 monthly, plus enjoy zero electricity bills

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today announced a new solar policy to provide generation-based incentives to individuals who install rooftop solar panels at home. Under the Delhi Solar Policy 2024, consumers who opt for solar power generation will be financially rewarded. The scheme is likely to be notified in the next 10 days.

“We have issued a new solar policy today – Solar Policy 2024. We formed the government (in Delhi) in 2015 and after that, we launched the Solar Policy 2016. That was considered as the most progressive solar policy in the country, and it laid the foundation of solar power in Delhi,” said Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal at a press conference.

“Delhi government has released a new solar policy, Solar Policy 2024. Till now the policy of 2016 was in force, it was the most progressive policy in the country… Electricity is free up to 200 units in Delhi, half up to 400 units and above that the full bill is charged. Under the new solar policy, those who install solar panels on their rooftop will have zero electricity bills, no matter how many units of electricity they consume. With this, you can earn Rs 700-900 every month,” Kejriwal added while making announcement about the scheme.

The policy also mandates the installation of rooftop solar panels in all government buildings with an area of 500 square metres within the next three years.

Atishi, the Power Minister of Delhi, revealed that the solar policy was recently approved by the Cabinet and will be officially implemented within the next 10 days.

It is worth noting that the Delhi government’s 2016 policy has already resulted in the deployment of over 250 MW of rooftop solar plants and 1,250 MW of utility-scale solar plants, contributing to a total of 1,500 MW. This impressive figure meets approximately 7.2% of Delhi’s annual electricity demand.

The new Delhi scheme comes in the backdrop of Centre announcing a new rooftop solar scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22 announced the “Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana” with a target of installing rooftop solar on 1 crore houses.Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana aims to provide electricity to low and middle-income individuals through solar rooftop installations, along with offering additional income for surplus electricity generation.

The Prime Minister also directed that a massive national campaign should be started to mobilize residential segment consumers to adopt rooftop solar in large numbers.
