Mysuru: Here is an example of how tourism infrastructure development can change the fate of remote towns. Chunchanakatte, a remote village on the bank of the river Cauvery is an example of this. Following developmental works at an estimated cost of Rs 12 crore, Chunchanakatte has become a tourist spot, especially for pre-wedding photo shoots, creating jobs locally.
According to locals, the Srirama temple, Dhanushkoti waterfall, and single stone Shri Anjaneya statue of 31ft sculpted by renowned artiste Arun Yogiraj are the major attractions in the region.
Pre-wedding photo shoots
According to locals, from the last few weeks, this waterfalls area, the temple premises, and the Anjaneya statue have become the preferred spot for the pre-wedding photo shoot. “The cost associated with the pre-wedding photo shoot is very minimal compared to other tourist destinations. So, this area is preferred by one and all,” explained K Lokesh, a local photographer.
“No fee is charged photo shoots. The area is very safe and has good road connectivity to all the major towns of the region. So, people are preferring this destination,” he added.
According to the locals, although the waterfall was a tourism destination for a long time, the biggest challenge was the poor infrastructure, which was resolved recently through several government projects.
“The tourism developmental works were taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 12 crore in Chunchanakatte. In total, we spent Rs 24 crore for the tourism developmental activities in the KR Nagar constituency,” explained KR Nagar MLA SR Mahesh.
“Now, every day, this area is witnessing a footfall of 2,000 people. Once the water level in the river Cauvery increases, a huge number of tourists will definitely arrive,” he explained. These developmental works were sanctioned when he was the state tourism minister.
According to the locals, the area has now become a favourite destination for one-day picnics for people from the nearby areas. “The tourism activities is improving our business. The government should promote more such activities,” said Gururaj K, a local businessperson.
