DGCA issues notice to Air India, SpiceJet for rostering non-CAT III pilots, ET Infra

Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Thursday issued show cause notice to Air India and SpiceJet for rostering non-CAT III compliant pilots.

The notice was issued after more than 50 Delhi airport-bound flights were diverted due to low visibility on December 24-25 and December 27-28, said DGCA.

A senior DGCA official confirmed that the notice was issued to airlines after it was found that a large number of flight diversions that were reported at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi were large because these airlines rostered non-CAT III compliant pilots. The pilots were not trained to take off or land in low visibility.

“The airlines have been asked to reply within fifteen days,” the official added.

Notably, CAT III refers to a type of Instrument landing system that allows the flights to land in low visibility conditions such as fog, snow and rain. The civil aviation ministry is monitoring the fog situation on a daily basis.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia last week said the ministry is coordinating with the airport and airlines, and putting in place measures to deal with the issue. Terming the fog issue as a “transitory phenomenon”, the minister in an interview to PTI also said this year the situation has been slightly unprecedented in terms of the density of fog.

Dense fog and low visibility engulfed the northern and northeastern parts of the country amidst harsh winter. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 15 degrees in the national capital on Thursday and the fog conditions are likely to decrease in the next two days, the IMD said. While IMD said that the cold wave is likely to persist for the next 2-3 days in Delhi and the National Capital Region.
