Dominican Rep expects renewable energy call in 2023

A bidding model for renewable energy in the Dominican Republic is due to be ready by year-end, according to Andrés Astacio, head of power regulator SIE.

The official made the comment at the Latam Future Energy event where he said that a first call would follow in 2023.

Astacio pointed to last year’s publication of decree 608-21 which tasked the watchdog as well as the energy and mines ministry and national energy commission CNE with drafting a proposal to establish competitive mechanisms to sign energy purchase contracts based on renewable sources.

“We would be talking about an additional 1-1.2GW over the next five to six years,” he said.

The Caribbean nation’s current targets are for renewables to cover 25% of energy demand in 2025 and 30% in 2030.

The head of the regulator also highlighted that work is underway to expand and reinforce the transmission grid to accompany the new generation capacity.

Other actions include updating norms, such as incentives for energy storage, and working with power distributors to determine the optimum integration of distributed generation.
