Entergy will resume power cut-offs starting in June

Entergy New Orleans will be resuming power cut-offs starting in June, according to customers who received letters from the utility. The letter said starting June, grace period extensions for overdue power bills will end. The utility had been allowing customers additional time to pay bills during the coronavirus pandemic. When WDSU reached out to Entergy New Orleans about the letter, they provided the following response:”Customers who make payment arrangements will not be disconnected during the phased resumption of disconnects. Disconnecting service is the option of last resort. Customers should contact Entergy New Orleans immediately to enroll in a payment arrangement plan that meets their needs.”They added, “Entergy New Orleans is committed to working with customers who are experiencing financial difficulty and give them every opportunity to make payment arrangements, which includes deferring overdue balances for up to 12 months and waiving late fees with payment arrangements.”Customers wishing to enroll in a payment arrangement plan can visit entergy.com/billhelp, select ‘deferred payment’ on the free Entergy mobile app, call 1-800-ENTERGY (1-800-368-3749), or visit one of the two Entergy New Orleans walk-in care centers for assistance.COX Cable issued the following statement on how it is handling overdue payments: “We handle disconnects on a case-by-case basis. If a customer is experiencing difficulty paying his/her bill, we ask that they contact us and we will work with them to try to keep them connected. “There are a number of ways we are working to help our customers to stay connected at a time when many are facing challenges due to the pandemic. “Just last week we announced our participation in the Emergency Broadband Benefit program. And we permanently increased the speeds of Connect2Compete, Cox’s low-cost internet program, to ensure customers have the internet bandwidth to be successful.”To learn more about the Emergency Broadband Benefit program, click here. The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans also addressed their changing policies regarding late fees and cut-offs, stating, “At this time we are continuing to waive late fees and shut off procedures. Our Board of Directors will meet for their monthly meeting on this Wednesday, May 19, and will likely bring up the topic of resuming these procedures in the future.”However, they are reinstating their processing fee of $2.95 for customers paying by debit or credit card online or by phone.They added, “As always, we are willing and able to work with customers who wish to enter a payment plan if they have fallen behind on their payments. Customers can call 52-WATER and press 2 for a Customer Service Representative or visit us at one of our Customer Service Centers.”
