GCCI seeks traffic panel for highway work at Porvorim, Infra News, ET Infra

PANAJI: As work on the six-lane elevated highway at Porvorim is expected to begin soon, the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI) as well as the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) have written to the state government seeking to be a party to the discussions on alternative routes to be carved for traffic during the construction work.

GCCI president Shrinivas Dempo said that as the Porvorim area is one of the busiest stretches in the state, the association is concerned about the business interests of establishments during the construction work.

Dempo said that it is important that multiple stakeholders are brought together to prepare an effective traffic plan which prevents chaos as well as minimises loss to businesses.

“We welcome this decision of construction of the new highway. As the state develops, traffic management and creating infrastructure for traffic is important. As a Chamber, we have to look after our members and that business continues without hindrance. We have seen once in the case of the new Zuari bridge work, and that it does take a toll when the construction goes on. In Porvorim, our concern is that the density is much more, particularly from the business and commercial angle,” Dempo told TOI.

He said that GCCI has already suggested three alternative routes, but the plans need to be brainstormed with authorities and other stakeholders. “We want that a committee is formed of representation from multiple stakeholders to brainstorm the traffic management, routes, as well as discipline so that everybody is taken into account,” Dempo said.

He said that deploying more traffic personnel to ensure discipline by commuters and preventing parking in wrong spots should also be addressed while making the traffic management plan.
