Govt asks national highways to improve road infrastructure, Infra News, ET Infra

BHUBANESWAR: The state government has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to improve road safety infrastructure in Odisha after the Supreme Court committee on road safety (SCCORS) expressed serious displeasure over poor maintenance of national highways at some places.

About two weeks ago, SSCORS’s secretary Sanjay Mital inspected road safety infrastructure on Bhubaneswar-Puri NH-316 and on some stretches of NH-16 passing through Odisha.

“The secretary expressed concern that both the NHs are not maintained properly by NHAI. The observations of the secretary have been sent for compliance,” read a letter from the state transport department to the NHAI on Tuesday.

According to police records, 5,467 road accident deaths were reported in the state in 2022 and at least 2,043 of them took place on the NHs in Odisha, which is about 37% of the total fatalities. Of the 2,043 deaths, 1,606 fatalities (79%) occurred on the NHs that are maintained by the NHAI. The remaining 437 deaths were reported on the NHs that are maintained by the state government.

Quoting the SCCORS’s observations, the transport department has asked the NHAI to provide requisite infrastructure on NHs across Odisha for implementation of camera-based Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS), which is an initiative to take action against violators of traffic rules. Currently, Driving Electronic Enforcement to Save Human Lives under the IEMS is operational on around 100 km stretch on NH-16 between Panikoili and Rameswar. “We have proposed to the NHAI that they should put in place the infrastructure for IEMS on NHs across the state. Cameras can detect vehicles for over speeding, triple riding, wrong lane movement, without helmet, rash driving etc,” state transport commissioner Amitabh Thakur said.

“We have been taking safety measures at regular intervals on roads under our jurisdiction. The observations of the SCCORS would be complied,” an NHAI official said.
