LUCKNOW: To boost economic development, the state government has pumped in Rs 9,000 crore to augment road network in the last six and a half years, officials said.

A senior government official said that two-lane connectivity would be provided between 179 government buildings to ensure that people looking to get their works done in government departments could commute easily.

“At least 26 sub-divisional (tehsil) headquarters and 153 block headquarters have been identified in the initial phase,” he added.

The officer said that with the budget of Rs 2,653 crore, 1,617 km of road network would be spruced up to improve connectivity between government offices.

At least 25 locations which connect Uttar Pradesh to neighbouring states and Nepal will also be improved facilitate easy commutation of heavy motor vehicles. “Total 94 such routes have been identified under the programme and 1,126 km of road network has to be spruced up with a budget of Rs 2,171 crore,” he said.

Road medians, dividers and paved shoulders are being provided alongside the carriageways in border towns which already have two-lane connectivity.

There are 1,928 villages having population of over 250 which do not have road connectivity as long as distance between two villages is 5km. Single lane road is provided in such parts.

Work will begin on 2,107km of rural roads with a budget of Rs 1,679 crore.

PWD minister Jitin Prasada said that regular monitoring was being carried out by the headquarters and action would be taken against lax officials.
