GURGAON: Highway projects will bring down congestion and help fight air pollution, Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday at the inauguration of the 19km Gurgaon section of the Dwarka Expressway.

“High pollution levels in NCR are a concern and have led to several PILs in Supreme Court. Highway infrastructure projects worth Rs 65,000 crore are being executed in NCR, out of which work worth Rs 35,000 crore has been completed. The rest will be done by the end of the year,” said Gadkari.

Major highway projects that have been completed in NCR include the Delhi-Meerut and Eastern Peripheral expressways, the Sohna highway and a portion of the Urban Extension Road-II. Among major projects on which work is under way are the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and the DND Flyway-Sohna link. Gadkari said govt is keen on protecting the environment while carrying out development work, and nearly 12,000 trees were transplanted during the construction of Dwarka Expressway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who inaugurated the expressway, said it will bring huge opportunities to a region that was considered unsafe with people even avoiding it after sunset. Today, he said, it serves as a hub for major corporations, contributing to the rapid development of the NCR. Talking about the transformation and how the expressway will bring down trip time between Delhi and Gurgaon, the PM said the Rs 9,000-crore project will change travel experience between the two cities and give a push to automobile and manufacturing industries.

Gurgaon MP and Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh pointed out that Gurgaon makes maximum contribution to the state exchequer and infrastructure work done in past few years have given a push to ‘Brand Gurgaon’. “The city has got special attention from the Centre to improve highway connectivity to all parts of the region, including Nuh,” he said.
