Huge Oakland port development project lands veteran logistics tenant

OAKLAND — A West Coast logistics giant has leased a huge warehouse complex at the Port of Oakland, a deal that marks a successful first phase of the redevelopment of the long-defunct Oakland Army Base site.

PCC Logistics has leased a building that totals 460,800 square feet, the project’s developer, CenterPoint Properties, said Tuesday.

That amount of square footage is equivalent to eight football fields.

“Our team met its goals, to build a fop-flight facility and anchor port expansion and modernization, help make a significant positive impact on the city and region, and partner with a terrific tenant in PCC,” said Michael Murphy, CenterPoint’s chief development officer.

The just-leased building is the first of two phases in the redevelopment of the former Oakland Army Base. CenterPoint broke ground in 2019 on the building.

The Port of Oakland hopes that the seaport will be able to operate more efficiently with a major logistics endeavor situated within the port rather than at an off-site location.

Brokers Jason Ovadia and Patrick Metzger of commercial real estate firm JLL and Sam Higgins of commercial real estate firm KBC Advisors arranged the lease.

The 27-acre site that the building occupies will provide significant parking and outdoor storage. An upswing in imports to U.S. seaports, including the West Coast ports, has intensified the need for efficient logistics operations.

San Leandro-based PCC Logistics provides a wide range of distribution and warehouse services, including some rail services. The company operates out of the ports of Oakland, Seattle, Tacoma, Los Angeles and Long Beach.

PCC Logistics serves the food and beverage, large cargo, retail, e-commerce, climate control, warehouse and distribution industries.

“We worked closely with the Port of Oakland to ensure the optimal outcome for the port,” Murphy said.
