Industrial relations in the oil and gas sector are not good

[ad_1]

Dear Editor,

This is the first time I have ever written to a newspaper. I wish to express the feelings of myself and others who work in the oil and gas sector. On the news, I saw the Energy Chamber saying we should not seek to bring in other unions into Guyana to help workers in the oil and gas industry. This is a strange position as many local companies have teamed up with foreign companies to develop businesses in the sector. So how could it be right on one hand and wrong on the other? I am confused.

I also saw that the Chamber says industrial relations was good in the sector. As an employee within one of the companies of the sector, I can say it is far from good. Some of us got to have two jobs to make ends meet. We do not get overtime or many other things. So how can things be good? Is it good because the owners are not paying us and treating us right? I believe the efforts to assist workers is long overdue. We have been suffering in silence for too long. I, and many of my colleagues, cannot wait to hear more.

Sincerely,

(Name and Address Provided)
