Bengaluru-based Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA), an organisation of IT and banking companies situated at the Outer Ring Road (ORR) area of the city, in a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, said member companies and establishments lost Rs 225 crore in a single day due to intense rains and subsequent flooding, blaming the poor infrastructure for the losses.

Parts of the city were submerged after heavy rain brought India’s IT and startup capital to its knees on August 30.

“Poor infrastructure on this corridor is bringing down the efficiency and productivity of the companies and putting employee safety and well-being at risk. Flooding on ORR on August 30 has led to a loss of Rs 225 crore as staff were stuck on the road for more than 5 hours,” the ORRCA letter stated.

The body further noted that the inadequate infrastructure situation on the ORR has reached a “crisis level”, despite only30% of workers employed in the area working from office.

The collapse of the infrastructure has drawn global concern on Bengaluru’s ability to handle further growth, it added.

Some of the member companies, who have made a substantial investment in the ORR, had to trigger emergency business continuity plans, restart work from home or pass on critical work to locations outside of Bengaluru, causing reputational and economic damage to the city and the state, the letter added.

The situation continues for the past three days and beyond.

The group further alleged that several planned construction projects aimed at easing the situation in the ORR area have either stalled or progressed very slowly.

It further several projects meant for the construction of arterial roads, high-density corridor roads, and improvement in traffic situation due to Metro construction were green-lighted some years ago but have not been completed.

The association has demanded a clear roadmap for the improvement of the situation.
